Render Coverage: The Ultimate Guide

When ordering materials online, customers are often unsure about the quantities they will require for the approximate square meterage they are working on. So, we’ve compiled a guide to EWI Pro render coverage to clarify things!

Coloured Render Coverage

Our coloured renders come in a variety of grain sizes. This means the grain size will determine how much coverage you’ll get from a 25kg bucket. Remember that these numbers may vary slightly depending on application; for example, if you drop/lose relatively little product, you will get more out of the bucket. Renders that come in different grain sizes are applied to the same thickness as the aggregate size. Therefore, a 1mm grain size render must be applied to at least the same thickness. Coverage for our Premium Bio SiliconeSiliconeSilicone Silicate, and Acrylic renders is as follows.

  • 1mm Grain Size – 10m²
  • 1.5mm Grain Size – 7-10m²
  • 2mm Grain Size – 6-7m²
  • 3mm Grain Size – 5-6m²

Silicone renders offer numerous benefits. One of their key advantages is their breathability, allowing moisture to escape from the building, which helps prevent damp and mould. They also provide excellent weatherproofing, protecting against harsh conditions like rain, wind, and frost due to their water-resistant properties. Additionally, silicone renders are self-cleaning, with rainwater washing away dirt and dust. Ultimately, this keeps the façade looking clean over time. Their flexibility ensures crack resistance as the render expands and contracts with temperature changes, maintaining a smooth, durable surface. Silicone renders offer aesthetic versatility while ensuring a long-lasting, vibrant finish. At EWI Store, we can tint our silicone renders to thousands of colours. They are also ideal for external wall insulation systems, enhancing energy efficiency and weather protection.

Lime Render Coverage

The EWI Pro Heritage Lime Range continues to grow, with Lime Paint and Lime Wash now in stock. These products supplement EWI Pro’s Lime Basecoat and Lime Render, which work effectively in heritage restoration, including retrofitting projects.

  • Lime Basecoat – 15 kg/m² per cm thickness
  • Lime Render – 15 kg/m² per cm thickness
  • Lime Paint – 3-4L/

Lime render offers a range of benefits, particularly in breathability and flexibility, making it ideal for older or traditional buildings. Its breathability allows moisture to escape from the building, helping to prevent damp and moisture build-up, which is crucial for maintaining the integrity of heritage structures. Lime render is also highly flexible compared to cement-based renders. It can accommodate natural movement in a building without cracking, which is particularly important for older properties with softer materials. Additionally, lime has natural antibacterial properties, making it resistant to mould and fungal growth. It is also eco-friendly, as lime is a sustainable material with a low carbon footprint. The render ages gracefully, developing a weathered patina that enhances the character of a building over time.

Monocouche Render Coverage

Monocouche render is a dry-mix render, so the coverage can vary depending on how thick you apply it and how much water you mix in. The following coverage is, therefore, based upon applying the Monocouche render at a total thickness of 18mm before scratching back (two passes):

  • 1 x 25kg bag – 1m²

This render provides excellent durability and weather resistance, protecting the building from harsh conditions such as rain, wind, and frost. One of its key advantages is that it’s a through-coloured render, meaning the colour is mixed throughout the material, eliminating the need for painting and ensuring a uniform finish that won’t fade over time. Monocouche render is also breathable, allowing moisture to escape from the building and reducing dampness and mould risk. Additionally, it provides a clean, modern look with various textures and finishes, making it a versatile option for enhancing the aesthetic appeal of any property.

Mineral Render Coverage

Mineral render is also a dry-mix render; however, this is a thin coat. One bag will, therefore, stretch between 8-10m² depending upon the application and the thickness of the render. Mineral render needs to be painted with Silicone paint; one bucket of Silicone paint (15L) will cover 60-70m².

Mineral render offers several advantages, including its fire resistance and quick-drying properties. Its high fire resistance makes it a safe and reliable option for building exteriors, especially in areas where fire safety is a priority. Additionally, mineral render is known for its fast drying time, which is particularly beneficial during colder months or damp conditions, allowing for quicker project completion even in challenging winter weather.

Basecoats Coverage

Basecoats, especially, can be a tricky thing to calculate. Because the majority of our basecoats are multi-purpose and are used as both an adhesive and a basecoat, the coverage can vary:

  • Adhesion and basecoat – 2.8m²
  • Basecoat for rendering only – 4.5m²

For adhesion purposes, the coverage will also vary depending on the type of style you choose. A dot and dab application of insulation boards will use less adhesive than the full coverage of the board. Overall, the insulation boards will require at least 40% of the back of the board to be covered with adhesive.

Substrate Primers

Substrate primers are applied directly to the substrate (brick, block or other) before other materials are applied. Coverage of the primers is hard to estimate as certain substrates are more absorptive than others, for example, if you render a particularly dry substrate. Coverage for substrate primers is as follows:

  • Water Based Primer (5L) – 15-30m² depending upon the absorptive capacity of the substrate
  • Universal Primer (20kg) – 50-70m² depending upon the absorptive capacity of the substrate

Render Primers

Render primers are applied on top of the basecoat before the render is applied. These help to create a vibrancy of colour and strong adhesion to the basecoat. We have two main types of render primer: Acrylic & Mineral Primer. Coverage for these is as follows:

  • 7L bucket – 20m²
  • 21L bucket – 60-70m²
