Kingspan, also known as Phenolic Insulation, has a reputation for having the following benefits:

  • Good thermal properties.
  • Fire-resistant.
  • Water-resistant.
  • Breathable.

In this blog, we will take a look at these benefits in a bit more detail. We’ll also touch on how Kingspan compares to other methods of insulation e.g., soundproofing. Read on to find out more!

What is Kingspan?

Kingspan Kooltherm K5 is a high-performance rigid insulation product. It is composed of phenolic resin, making it a unique and advanced insulation material. Kingspan is well regarded for its incredible thermal properties. Not only does it deliver incredible thermal properties, but it is also highly waterproof, breathable, and space-saving.

Let’s take a look at some of these properties, as well as some other questions you might have about Kingspan!

Is Kingspan K5 soundproof?

If you’re considering installing a Kingspan external wall insulation system on your property, you might want to know about its soundproofing abilities.

While Kingspan offers some level of acoustic insulation to buildings, it is a far more effective thermal insulator and space-saver. If you’re specifically looking for an insulation system with a focus on soundproofing, you should consider opting for a mineral wool insulation material – such as Rockwool. Let’s take a closer look at Kingspan’s benefits.

Kingspan for space-saving!

Earlier in this Kingspan Ultimate Guide we mentioned one of the key benefits associated with Kingspan is that it is incredibly effective when it comes to saving space. This is because it is much slimmer than other insulation boards. This is beneficial as it allows you to benefit from high-quality insulation, even in areas where space is at a premium.

Areas where space is at a premium can include the likes of narrow passageways between buildings and under windowsills that cannot be extended far.

Does Kingspan K5 have good thermal properties?

Kingspan K5 is an excellent product for enhancing the thermal capabilities of your property. The Kingspan Kooltherm K5 has a non-fibrous, thermoset phenolic core. This means that it works to regulate the temperature of the building, increasing the internal temperature of the property.

Indeed, Kingspan has a thermal conductivity of between 0.021 W/mK and 0.022 W/mK – depending on the thickness of the insulation. This means that it is a very high performing insulation board.

Is Kingspan K5 fireproof?

Kingspan are committed to improving sustainability, as well as the health and wellbeing of building occupants. Fire safety has been a central force in Kingspan’s sustainability efforts.

As such, the Kingspan Kooltherm K5 insulation boards are manufactured with fire safety in mind. When they encounter fire, they rapidly form a stable char which shields the insulation beneath from heat and flames. Once fire is removed from the boards, they rapidly self-extinguish. Indeed, because of this feature, the Kingspan K5 insulation boards have been awarded a fire rating of Class 0 (B). This means Kingspan boards bring incredible fire-resistance to your property, giving you peace of mind that your home is protected.

Not only does Kingspan K5 offer protection against flames, but they are manufactured with a blowing agent that has minimal Ozone Depletion Potential and Global Warming Potential. Therefore, Kingspan is a great environmentally conscious option too.

Is Kingspan K5 waterproof?

Another key benefit to Kingspan K5 is that it is a great insulation material when it comes to waterproofing. Because it is incredibly breathable, it allows water moisture to escape through the surface. This ensures that no water ingress forms on the surface of the external wall.

Kingspan has a phenolic-based composition, this unique makeup has been designed with waterproofing in mind. The phenolic thermoset core ensures no water penetration can occur, whilst the breathability of the boards ensures moisture can still escape.

Therefore, if you’re looking for an insulation board that offer waterproofing capabilities, Kingspan is a great option!
