How Long Does Silicone Render Take to Dry?

Silicone render is a popular choice for creating a durable, modern finish on exterior walls, but once it has been applied, one of the most important questions is: how long does silicone render take to dry?

Under suitable conditions, EWI-075 Silicone Render has an average drying time of approximately 12 to 48 hours. However, this is not a fixed timeframe. Temperature, weather conditions and exposure can all affect how quickly the render dries, with colder conditions potentially extending the drying period significantly. 

Understanding these factors is important when planning a rendering project, particularly in the UK where conditions can change quickly.

For EWI Pro EWI-075 Silicone Render, the typical drying time is:

12–48 hours under suitable weather conditions.

The product should be applied and allowed to set within an application temperature range of +5°C to +25°C. 

The 12–48 hour period should be treated as a guide rather than a guarantee. Silicone render dries as moisture leaves the material, so environmental conditions have a significant influence on the process.

A warm, dry and relatively settled day will generally provide better drying conditions than a cold, damp or highly humid one.

Several factors can affect how quickly silicone render dries.

Temperature is one of the biggest considerations.

EWI-075 Silicone Render has an application and setting temperature range of +5°C to +25°C. In low temperatures, the drying process can take considerably longer than the typical 12–48 hour timeframe. 

This is particularly important during autumn and winter when temperatures can fall rapidly later in the day.

It is not enough for the temperature to be suitable only when you start applying the render. Conditions should also remain appropriate while the material begins to set and dry.

Fresh silicone render must be protected from rain and snow while it dries. 

Rain hitting render before it has properly set can affect the finished surface and potentially cause staining, washing or inconsistencies in the texture.

Always check the forecast before starting and make sure suitable protection is available if there is a chance of poor weather.

Hot conditions are not necessarily ideal either.

Fresh EWI-075 Silicone Render should be protected from direct sunlight during application and drying. 

Strong sunlight can cause one area of an elevation to dry considerably faster than another. Controlling the conditions helps achieve a more consistent finish across the wall.

Strong winds can also interfere with the drying process and fresh render should be protected from them. 

Wind can accelerate moisture loss from the surface and contribute to uneven drying, particularly across large exposed elevations.

Generally, silicone render is likely to dry more quickly in warmer conditions than it will during colder weather.

However, there is a difference between warm, suitable conditions and excessive exposure to heat or direct sunlight.

EWI-075 should only be applied within its specified +5°C to +25°C temperature range, so particularly hot elevations may need additional consideration and protection. 

During summer, installers may therefore plan their work around the direction of the sun rather than simply choosing the hottest part of the day.

Yes. Colder conditions can substantially increase the drying time.

The EWI-075 Product Data Sheet specifically notes that the drying period may be significantly longer in low temperatures. 

This means the standard 12–48 hour drying time should not automatically be expected during colder periods.

Installers should pay close attention to both daytime and overnight forecasts, particularly when temperatures are approaching the product's minimum application temperature of +5°C.

Correct application also helps the render achieve its intended finish.

EWI-075 Silicone Render is supplied as a ready-to-use, through-coloured product and should not be diluted with water or other products. Before application, the reinforced basecoat should be primed using EWI-333 Top Coat Primer. 

For standard grain sizes, the render is applied using a stainless-steel trowel. Excess material is removed so that the finished thickness corresponds to the grain size before the surface is finished with a plastic float using circular motions. 

EWI-075 is available in a range of grain sizes and can be used as either a render-only finish or as part of an EWI Pro External Wall Insulation system. 

The application process for 0.5mm EWI-075 Silicone Render differs slightly from the standard grain sizes.

The 0.5mm finish should be applied in two thin passes. The first coat is applied at approximately 0.5mm and must be allowed to dry fully before the second pass is applied. Once the second coat begins to firm, it can be finished using a plastic float. 

This means additional drying time needs to be considered when planning a project using the 0.5mm option.

The surface will gradually firm as it dries and the final colour and appearance will become more consistent.

However, you should not rely solely on how the render looks or feels at the surface. Environmental conditions can mean that the outer surface appears dry while the material is still completing its drying process.

Where possible, allow the full recommended drying period and take the recent weather conditions into account before carrying out any work that could disturb the finished surface.

Once EWI-075 Silicone Render has properly set, it provides excellent resistance to water and frost and its hydrophobic properties help protect the completed façade. 

The vulnerable period is immediately after application.

Until the render has sufficiently dried and set, it should be protected from rainfall and other adverse weather. This makes good project planning particularly important when rendering in changeable UK conditions.

You cannot force silicone render to dry, but you can create suitable conditions for it to set properly.

Before beginning a job, check both the daytime and overnight weather forecast. Make sure temperatures remain within the specified range and avoid applying the render when rain, snow, strong winds or unsuitable temperatures are expected.

Suitable scaffold sheeting and weather protection can also help protect newly applied render, although airflow should still be considered.

Most importantly, avoid rushing the process. Allowing the render sufficient time to dry gives the finish the best opportunity to achieve its intended appearance and performance.

As a general guide, allow 12–48 hours for EWI-075 Silicone Render to dry, while remembering that colder or otherwise unfavourable conditions may considerably extend this period.
