Extruded polystyrene XPS is a modern insulating material with fantastic thermal properties, good moisture resistance and high strength. The material has a smooth closed-cell surface ready for use. Perfect for insulating and protecting masonry buildings below the DPC and ground level. Can also be used to extend concrete windowsills when the extending the wall beyond the new insulated level.
This extruded polystyrene (XPS) board is a high density board that can be used for various applications on buildings, including DPC insulation, extending concrete windowsills or providing insulation backing where EPS is not suitable to use.
The XPS boards can be installed on existing buildings and new build properties. It can improve the appearance of the area where it is applied, reduce the risk of water penetration and improve the U-value.
The material is made out of closed-cell polystyrene, making it a compact and robust material. It comes in grey, ready to be applied with an adhesive-backed mortar. These XPS boards can be used on timber, masonry and system build properties as well as for tile hanging and as the base for a wide range of rendering systems.
The product is designed to be applied externally to the DPC, to extend concrete windowsills or as insulation backing where EPS is not suitable to use.
Composition: extruded polysterene, silver boards
Thermal Conductivity: 0.031W/(m2K)
Reaction to Fire: Class F
Size of boards: 1000mm by 500mm
Thickness of XPS boards: 100mm
Coverage in pack: 1m2 (so 2 boards in each pack).
Use a protection mat to prepare the property before applying the insulation to the DPC.
Try to use a hot knife or hot wire cutters to minimise mess.
The XPS insulation boards should be installed in accordance with a project plan or a brief prepared by the architect. The boards – if being applied to the area below the DPC or attached to the substrate – should be glued on with a quick drying mortar or adhesive (see EWI-220 EPS Basecoat).
After having been fixed to the area below the DPC or on the sills (when left to dry), the work area should be covered sufficiently to prevent water penetration or exposure to UV light.
When set and ready, apply the basecoat or mortar ready to sink into the fibre glass mesh. Once this has been installed, the substrate is ready for the application of the top coat.
Easy to sweep up or hoover.
