Cost Of Silicone Render Versus Monocouche Scratch Render

Here at EWI Store, we’re often asked about the various costs and benefits of our different silicone and monocouche scratch renders. Naturally, depending on your project requirements and personal preferences, you may have a favourite. All of our silicone renders provide a major aesthetic benefit in that they can be coloured and tinted to provide an extremely wide spectrum of colours, numbering in the thousands.

Silicone Render at EWI Store

Our Silicone Render range at EWI is one of the most versatile products available on the market due to a wealth of properties. Any render-only solution, or render and insulation solution will instantly make your property modern in look, as well as improving the energy efficiency of your home.

Along with the decorative improvements of your façade, silicone render provides the following benefits:

  • Flexible – Our Silicone Render is flexible, meaning you can apply it as part of a render-only system (i.e. no insulation). Unlike thicker sand and cement or monocouche renders, our Silicone Render provides a robust, long-lasting decorative finish that is unlikely to crack over time.
  • Breathable – EWI Pro Silicone Render is highly breathable. This makes it ideal for application on external wall insulation systems where breathable insulants have been used. For example, Mineral Wool or Wood Fibre insulation.
  • Hydrophobic – Silicone Render offers a hydrophobic protective barrier for your external walls, wicking away droplets of water. Varied compositions of our render products also grant them self-cleaning properties. Nano Drex Silicone Render offers the best protection against unwanted biological growth, due to its ability to not allow dirt and biological matter to settle on the surface.

Monocouche Scratch Render at EWI Store

The EWI-090 Monocouche Render is a high-performance cement-based, through-coloured scratch render. Monocouche Scratch render has been designed with water-repellence, breathability, and durability in mind. The EWI-090 is used on both larger commercial or residential projects, and suitable for concrete, clay, block, and brick substrates.

Monocouche Scratch Render is a thick coat render that is applied in two passes. The material base is composed of premium quality Portland cement, hydrated lime, polymers and modifying admixtures. This delivers enhanced adhesive properties, ensuring a flexible and crack-resistant finish is achieved.

The EWI-090 is a low maintenance product that achieves a natural stone-like appearance for a long-lasting decorative finish.

Silicone Render v Monocouche Scratch Render in Practice

Using our Material Calculator, you can very easily determine how much of what material you require for your project. Let’s examine the costs of a 100m2 property and the two solutions:

Silicone Render requirements

  • 50 bags of EWI-269 (2m2 per bag)
  • 3 rolls of Mesh (42.5m2 per roll)
  • 2 buckets of EWI-333 – 20kg (50m2 per bag)
  • 10 buckets of EWI-075 (10m2 per bucket)

Monocouche Scratch Render requirements

  • 100 bags of EWI-090 (1m2 per bag)
  • 3 rolls of Mesh (42.5m2 per roll)

Other products to consider

The primary issue encountered with the Monocouche Scratch Render will be the lack of a hydrophobic finish. The crack proof qualities are desirable, but the harsh weather conditions can cause havoc with your brand new façade. EWI Pro’s Nano Drex Render can be applied to protect the Monocouche Scratch Render and provide the desired hydrophobic qualities.

Another product to consider in your project is our EWI-310 Universal Primer which improves adhesion of the render or EWI to the substrate, facilitating application and reducing groundwork absorbency. Furthermore, the Universal Primer provides a frost-proof and water-permeable base.

If you are planning to apply an EWI system along with your render solution (which we strongly recommend!), the EWI-225 Premium Basecoat is an improved alternative to the EWI-269 Lightweight Basecoat. The Premium Basecoat is specifically designed for use with Mineral Wool due to its strong adhesive qualities. In addition, the basecoat can be used to create a reinforced basecoat layer.

Finally, if you have any other questions about our render solutions, our technical team will be happy to advise!
