EWI-749 Fine Finish Lime Plaster is a high-quality, decorative lime plaster designed to deliver a super-fine, traditional lime finish for both internal and external applications. Formulated using natural aerial lime, natural pozzolans and carefully graded aggregates, it produces a smooth, shrinkage-free surface with excellent workability and extended open time.
Breathable, porous and vapour-permeable, EWI-749 helps buildings regulate moisture naturally, reducing the risk of condensation and improving internal comfort. Its refined finish and flexible aesthetic options make it an ideal choice for heritage restoration, refurbishment and projects where a delicate, elegant lime appearance is required.
Intended Uses
EWI-749 Lime Plaster is suitable for internal and external refurbishment projects, particularly where the preservation of traditional building fabric and breathability is essential.
It is ideal for:
- Heritage and conservation projects
- Decorative finishing coats on lime-based systems
- Internal walls requiring a fine, breathable plaster finish
- External façades protected from direct water run-off
EWI-749 is a decorative finish only and must be applied over a suitable breathable lime base (or plasterboard if needed), not directly onto masonry or non-breathable substrates.
Key Benefits
- Super-fine texture for a smooth, traditional lime appearance
- Highly breathable, supporting natural moisture movement
- Reduces condensation risk and improves indoor air quality
- Excellent workability with extended open time
- Shrinkage-free finish when applied correctly
- Suitable for multiple finishing techniques, including polished effects
- Can be finished with lime paint or limewash
- Sustainable, heritage-friendly formulation
- Suitable for internal and external use (when correctly detailed)
Compatible Products
EWI-749 Fine Finish Lime Plaster is a breathable decorative lime finish and must be applied to a suitable lime basecoat and protected with breathable coatings to ensure correct curing and long-term performance.
EWI-747 Lime Render NHL 3.5
EWI-747 can be used as a breathable lime undercoat, providing a stable and compatible base for finishing with EWI-749 once properly cured and prepared.
EWI-748 Lime Basecoat NHL 5
Where additional strength or reinforcement is required, EWI-748 provides a durable lime basecoat suitable for finishing with EWI-749.
EWI-707 Lime Wash
Lime Wash offers breathable protection once EWI-749 has cured, helping regulate carbonation while maintaining vapour permeability.
EWI-705 Lime Paint
Once fully cured, Lime Paint may be applied where enhanced colour consistency or durability is required, while maintaining vapour permeability.
Lime Wash and Lime Paint can also be blended together to create bespoke, heritage-style finishes, offering greater creative control while maintaining breathability and surface protection.
EWI-749 should only be finished with lime-based, vapour-permeable coatings to preserve the integrity of the system.
Substrate Preparation
Substrates must be firm, clean and sound, free from dust, grease, oils, salts, efflorescence, biological growth or loose material that could impair adhesion.
EWI-749 must not be applied directly to brickwork, concrete blockwork, wood, plaster or external insulation substrates. It should only be applied over a breathable hydraulic lime basecoat or render that provides the required technical performance.
All substrates should be pre-dampened with clean water, ensuring they are moist but not saturated. External walls should ideally be wetted the day before application to aid curing and adhesion.
Product Preparation
Mix EWI-749 mechanically or manually using clean water.
- Pour water into a clean container
- Gradually add the powder while mixing
- Mix for 3-5 minutes until a smooth, lump-free mortar is achieved
- Allow the mix to rest for 3–5 minutes before application
Do not re-mix or add additional water once the material has begun to stiffen.
Application
EWI-749 is a decorative plaster and should not be used as a basecoat.
- Apply using a stainless-steel trowel
- Typical application thickness: 2-3 mm
- Maximum thickness per coat: 4 mm
For a polished or glossy finish, burnish the surface by repeatedly smoothing with the centre of the trowel until the desired sheen is achieved.
Do not apply to horizontal or inclined surfaces exposed to direct rainfall, or onto waterproof substrates. Ensure appropriate detailing is in place to prevent water run-off over finished façades.
