What is silicone paint?

Before we discuss the properties that make it a suitable solution for painting over coloured render, it is worth exploring exactly what this product is and its composition.

So, Silicone Paint is a type of high-performance masonry paint (for brick and blockwork substrates). It can be used for painting over existing silicone render to refresh the façade, or over mineral render to seal it. It is suitable for indoor and exterior wall coverage, and some of our customers have even reported using it in their bathrooms!

Because of its silicone-based composition, this product possesses several great properties that make it a worthwhile option for circumstances where you are unhappy with the colour of the completed render project.

In the following sections we will outline each of these, and will explore some other queries related to this topic!

Why is silicone paint good for covering render that you’re unhappy with?

So, at this point you might be wondering, exactly why is silicone paint the answer to the problem of you having a render colour that you are unhappy with?

There are several unique properties that it has that make it ideal for this circumstance. We will discuss each of these below!

Can be tinted to any colour!

First and foremost, silicone paint can be tinted to any colour you wish! This is the main reason why it is the ideal solution to painting over render. Not only can you exactly match the colour of your silicone paint to the colour of your render, but you can tint it to a different shade to improve the look of your property.

Breathable

Secondly, it is highly breathable. While this doesn’t affect the colour much, it is a useful property to invest in. It means that water particles in the render system can pass through the surface and limits dampness.

Flexible

Flexibility means the render has a greater resistance to expansion and contraction within the building structure from changing temperatures. A highly flexible render means it is also less prone to cracking.

Hydrophobic

Silicone Paint is also highly water repellent. This means that water droplets roll off the surface rather than permeate it. This is a self-cleaning property – ensuring the appearance of the wall remains fresh for longer.

Types of silicone paint available?

At EWI Store, we have various types of silicone paints available. This is because, while it is an excellent standalone product, you can tailor it to your specific needs. For example:

Nano Drex EWI-007

The first in our silicone paint range is the EWI-007 Nano Drex. This is our most advanced silicone paint and provides an all-round protective layer when applied to your substrate. This silicone-based paint is unique in that it utilises nano-particle technology to provide the most breathable, hydrophobic, and flexible protective coating to your property’s exterior.

Due to its unbeatable level of protection, the Nano Drex is ideal in areas with high wind and water exposure. For example, in coastal areas.

Premium Bio EWI-006

One unique selling points of Premium Bio is that it is best suited to areas with high exposure to biological growth and dirt.

For this reason, Premium Bio is ideal as a finishing topcoat for properties with a high level of surrounding vegetation e.g., woodlands and parks.

Silicone Paint EWI-005

The EWI-005 silicone paint is ideal for quickly and efficiently covering over render. It has all of the abovementioned properties, however, as it is the standard version, it doesn’t quite offer the same level of protective coating as the others.

Is silicone paint compatible with K rend / monocouche?

K rend is a type of monocouche – or cement-based render. Something to note with monocouche renders is that they are prone to cracking on the surface. For this reason, you might be wondering if silicone-based masonry paint is suitable for K-rendered surfaces.

The answer is yes! So, if you’ve recently rendered your property’s external walls with monocouche and are unhappy with the colour, silicone paint is still an option!

As mentioned, this product is breathable, water repellent, and flexible. We selected the most premium ingredients for our silicone paint range. This means that you can use it on your monocouche rendered property.

This product is suitable in this instance as it works to coat the rendered substrate whilst providing a strong protective coating to the surface.
