Conversely, to convert a U-value to an R-value, you divide 1 by the U-value. In formulaic terms: R-value = 1 / U-value U-value = 1 / R-value This means that if a material has a high R-value (and thus good insulation properties), it will have a low U-value, indicating a low rate of heat transfer.
